As Chair of the Arts, Sports, Tourism, Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs Joint Committee, my role differs to other Chairmen on the basis that our Committee serves two Ministers – John O’Donoghue (Arts, Sports and Tourism) and Eamon Ó Cuív (Community, Rural and Gaeltacht).
As a Select Committee, only the Dail members meet to deal with the “nuts and bolts” of departmental activity. This includes taking Committee Stages of Bills, discussing legislation and debating the estimates of both departments. A list of recently passed legislation can be found on this site.
As a Joint Committee (made up of both Houses of the Oireachtas), we can take on any issue that relates to any of the topics in our title. We can call public bodies before us, or organisations that are interested in the subject. We can ask people to account for their actions and draw up reports on what we find. Our reports can be accessed through the relevant links across.
